DBC explores

a weeklong summer camp all about publishing

DBC Summer Camp

Have you ever wanted to publish something you wrote, but didn’t have any idea how to do it? At our very own summer camp called DBCexplores, you'll have all your questions answered during a week of creativity and exploration!  Join us as we unlock the secrets of writing and publishing with fun activities and engaging conversations.

What do we do?

What do people have to say about the camp?

Mia participated in 2024, and she said: "It was really cool how we got the chance to talk to different people from all aspects of a book’s journey, from the writers to the literary agents and publicists. It was really eye-opening and revealed so many more opportunities to work with books, not just as a writer. It was super fun to hang out with people that were as passionate about books and writing as I am and it was awesome that we all got a chance to write and publish our own book. I would definitely do it again!!"

One of the publishing professionals who spoke with our campers told us, "I had a blast with the students, you're doing such a good job! They seemed so stoked to be there and to be talking about reading."

July 2024

In July, 13 middle schoolers and two high school counselors participated in a one-week camp where they collaboratively wrote, designed, and published two highly creative stories. The camp featured insightful sessions with a diverse range of guest speakers from the publishing world and local journalism, including representatives from The Indy, WUNC, Golden Fig Books, Algonquin Books, Literary Helm, Duke University Press, Horse & Buggy Press, and Pine State Publicity.

Following the completion of their stories and layout, local printing company Laser Image printed 100 copies of the book. These were distributed for free to independent bookstores such as The Regulator, Golden Fig Books, and Letters Community Bookshop. It was a remarkable experience for the students to see their hard work come to life in print!

In this collection of short stories, readers will find intriguing plot, dark betrayal, and heart-wrenching suspense. Found exclusively at Golden Fig Books, Letters Community Bookshop, and The Regulator.

One local book reviewer loved our book!!

A dystopian adventure set in Thanato State, a nightmare town where no one can enter and no one can leave... Or can they? With crackling dialogue, suspense, and riveting (and sometimes brutally violent) action scenes on nearly every page, Brain Freeze might just be the successor to Stranger Things

Featuring a double-crossing detective, a blackmail-happy cat with a blog, and a heroic golden retriever, this small-town mystery delivers plenty of intrigue and more than a few plot twists, along with some elegant prose I truly savored.
